Day 3 in Paris - Les Catacombes.

Sunday dawned clear and freezing. Unfortunately for us most shops are closed on Sunday. We had decided to buy so shoes and jackets but there were none to be found. We thought the Eiffel Tower would be miserable in the freezing cold so decided to visit the Catacombes instead. There was a big queue when we got there but it was worth waiting to get in. For one thing it was 14 degrees in the Catacombes which was a lot warmer than outside, even standing in the sun.

The Catacombes used to be mines under Paris where they dug out stones to build with. In the 18th Century they were converted into underground cemeteries as the cemeteries were overcrowded and were causing health problems for people who lived near by. (I think it was diseasing the water.) So they moved all the dead bodies into the underground tunnels! They did it at night and transported them on carts through the city and stacked them all up underground. It was quite cool to see.
On the walls whey carved the date when they had fortified the tunnels.

The people were moved from the Cemetery of the Innocents.

There are literally millions of bodies under there. There are kilometers of winding tunnels and they are stacked floor to ceiling with bones and skulls!

We went home after that so we could get some sleep before catching the train to the airport that night. Here's the view from our window.

We slept till 9.20 then packed up and set off on the trains with all our baggage to the airport. When we arrived everything there was shut. No tea. We spent an uncomfortable 4 hours trying to get some sleep on horrible seats with metal arm rests. When we got on the plane we didn't realise that you could choose your seats. Someone swapped with us though so we could sit together. We were flying on Easy Jet which is pretty budget. The flight to Morocco was 3 hours.
Bye, Love Amy.
