Mohammed's Cave.

This post was written on the 8th April 2012

Some really random stuff goes down in Morocco. For example there are always people popping out of the woodwork/rocks/bushes in the most remote places. We were walking over this sand dune yesterday morning to check the surf (another 5am start) when BAM a bunch of be-robed ladies with donkeys come trotting out of nowhere.

There is also some insane driving happening on the roads. This afternoon we were driving along behind a train of traffic when this dude decided to overtake the whole trail with an oncoming traffic-train coming towards us. He made it with less than a metre to spare. I was sure I was about to witness a horrific head on collision. I still can't figure out how he pulled the maneuver off. Yesterday A.J. got fined for driving without his license. He got fined 300 Dirrums which is about 30 Euro (N.Z.$48 ish) Then when he was driving home after the surf there was an ambulance on the side of the road and as he slowly drove past it a guy popped out the side of it and hit our car with the stretcher! (I mean really, look what you are doing before you open a door on a highway and get out!!!) So we have had some funny driving experiences. Not to mention the funny transportation methods some people employ. Side saddle donkey anyone? Putty as motorbike with no helmet? Or would you prefer an ancient taxi that overtakes on blind corners?

There are many animals that live out of the rubbish bin around Taghazout. Yesterday when we got up at 4.45 to go surfing we saw an old woman picking through the rubbish. When we returned there was a mob of goats perched in the bins chowing down.

Later on there was a dog having a chew and no doubt the cats were next. I love all the cats and dogs about the place. There was a cute one having a snooze in a loader.

And there were some cute ones on the rocks at anchor point.

We have been having a fun time hanging out with Jeff and A.J. It was pretty lucky that we met up with them and were staying for the same amount of time and all are keen to do the same things. We all have fun together and get along really well. We have been chilling on the rooftop of the Ocean Surf House a bit.

This is Abdu's dog Amalou.

We also like chilling at our favorite cafe/restaurant L' Auberge.

This is the view from L' Auberge.

Steve's coffee with lumps of sugar.

Today we had an interesting experience. The boys surfed Boilers on high tide and Steve and A.J. Got some scary barrels (cause it breaks so close to the rocks.) - I opted to be photographer.

When they got out this guy called Mohammed came over and was chewing our ears off and wouldn't go away. We were watching the surf to see if there was any improvement. He kept wanting to show us his cave and for us to come and have some tea with him at the light house where he lived. (We had heard trying Moroccan tea is an experience you should try.) We kept saying no to him cause to be honest he was a bit odd (and had dubious dental hygiene). Eventually though A.J. agreed so we all hopped in the car and drove off along the dusty rocky shore to see Mohammed's cave. It was actually pretty cool. It was right on the shore of the sea with the waves crashing up next to the door on the rocks.

All Mohammed's brothers/cousins/mates were in the cave and they all started singing and dancing.

They were cooking up a tagine. (Spelling?) They wanted us to eat it so we had a taste and it was quite nice. You have to use your bread as your fork. Wow it was so crazy! It was cool at first but then it went on and on and we were like – can we leave? After a few hours we finally left and Steve had another surf.

Bye. xoxo
