Riomaggiore

Written 12th May 2012

This afternoon we stumbled upon a charming little village. I had read in our Lonely Planet Guide Book that the coast here was pretty. It is just north of La Spezia in Italy in a protected Marine reserve called Cinque Terre (Named after the 4 villages in the protected area). So we headed out this way. We drove out on a cliff top windy road with a stunning view over the ocean. Next we descended down into a little village named Riomaggiore. There was a barrier arm blocking off the way into town so we payed the 3.50 Euro to park for an hour and walked on down into a little coastal heaven. It was so hot and the sea was crystal clear and inviting. The colourful olden days houses are all perched on the steep cliffside. The whole little village is nestled into the narrow little valley which is more like a crack in the mountains. It is really a cute little Italian place.

We explored a little and fell in love with the place and decided to stay the night. We got a room that came with a car park and stored our things away. The room is nice and done in a cute Italian seaside rustic theme. It is up a few back alley ways where the locals live in a part of the town that was built 300 years ago.

The man who rented us the room was a mighty nice fellow who had a good chat to me while I sorted out the room and Steve went back to the car to make sure we didn't get a ticket. He thought I walked very fast up the hill and I said it was because I had to keep up with Steve and he thought that was funny. He said he kept me in practice for walking fast. He liked gardening in his spare time and knew everyone in the town and said “ciao” to all the locals we past. After our bags were put in the room we walked down to the harbor to have a swim at the little beach.

It was so nice and refreshing! Steve even got a little bit romantic and gave me a kiss under the water. After our nice swim in that mint clear water we got changed and bought a pizza for tea that came in a giant box!

We ventured back down to the waters edge and had a rock perch picnic with a view of the town.

Next stop after a relax in the sun was up to the bar where we both got delicious gillatto and Steve had a beer.

I said “I wonder what is happening in your tummy right now.” With the gillatto and beer combination. He said “Love.” Haha. He cracks me up. Next stop was back to the water to admire the pretty lights.

What a nice day and night. Ciao. Xoxo Amy.
