Tapas in San Sebastian.

Written 3rd May 2012

Yesterday we had a lovely day. First we cleaned up our cabin. Here's a photo of it.

In the morning we got to talk to Leanne and Rachael and Bethell on Skype which was awesome. It was so nice talking to Leanne and Racheal and hearing about back home. Bethell was so cute, she was smooching Rachael's phone and purring when I was talking to her. I really miss her. After that we checked the surf at Labenne where we were staying (flat). There are heaps of concrete bunker type things there. I guess from the war.

Then we went and sat in the sun at Hossogour. Of course we bumped into Lisa and Nathan (our mates form Aussie) who we had also bumped into randomly the day before at a petrol station (they pulled up to use the pump behind us out of the blue) then a few hours later I walked past them at a rondo supermarket's carpark! So of course we should bump into them again. We sat and chatted with them in the increasingly hot sun. We went for a walk down the walk of fame and Steve tried to soak up up some surfing awesomeness from Kelly Slater's footprint.

Here is a cool mural from Hossegor.

Then we headed out to the factory shops to do a spot of shopping. Next stop the camera shop in San Sebastian (Spain) were I bought a new camera (and was stoked to be able to get the exact same camera bag like the one I bought in New Zealand before we left that I really loved. Then we were off to find our camp site. Unfortunately we got rather lost (the map was confusing to read where all the motorway off ramps were. They all sort of wind on top of each other and if you get on the wrong one might end up on another motorway and then you need to try and get off at another twirly offramp combination. (You can see how lostness could escalate quite quickly!) Anyway a few swearwords (Steve) and tears (me) later we got off the motorway in the general vicinity of the campsite. But the instructions I had were a bit odd and we ended going up this really steep winding country road and when we got to the top we realised that there was a main road that came along from the centre of town! Haha. But we got there in the end and the campsite was lovely. We set up camp and mucked about a bit.

We went for a walk and were treated to a pretty sunset.

We met some nice retired people from Poland. The lady spoke English very well but made a few endearing mistakes. She was one of those people who put the erase "bright eyed and bushy tailed" into your head. The man was very friendly too. He spoke German to me but I could't understand everything he said cause he was speaking quite quickly. They wanted our opinion on the best way to go to Andorra (as they thought we were French as our car has a French numberplate) but we were no help at all of course! We had a nice conversation though. By the end of it I was ready to adopt them as my Polish Grandparents. :) After that we headed into town to tastes some tapas.

Tapas are little delectable bits of food bursting with flavour. You're not really sure what you are going to get. You can order from a menu or you can just choose one from the big platters that are sitting on all the bars. We ordered a few and got a few lovely surprises and also plucked a few from the bar top selections.

Yum they were mouth watering! The first bar we went to was our favorite. The food was SO divine. It was a lovely balmy evening too and we were having trouble remembering that a few days ago we had been huddled next to the heater in our cabin! We strolled through the old town admiring the city - it is a very picturesque city with a lovely sweeping beach.

After a few more stops in to try some other tapas we headed back in a happy heat and food induced haze. This morning we packed up our tent and headed down the road to a place with a nice view recommended to us by the Polish couple.
It turned out to be an ancient amusement park on top of the hill west of San Sebastian. They were right, the view was spectacular. The toll guy at the gate even know some Maori and said Kiora to us and let us in for the price of 1 person instead of 2. We met an Auzzie couple about our parents age up there and had a chat for quite a while. Then walked around and admired the view. Steve thought it was funny because I took a picture of an old wall when there was a beautiful view behind me. (But I had already taken a picture of that. :) )

We had planned to drive down to the Mediterranean to Tarragona but it was such a lovely day we decided to stay and enjoy San Sebastian for longer. We headed back to the camp and surprised the receptionist by asking to stay another night. We set up camp, cooked some lunch and soaked up a bit of sun. I decided to do some laundry the old fashioned way and slung a bag of dirty laundry over my shoulder and headed down to the laundry sinks. I quite enjoyed myself – it was like a flash back to when I was a kid and used to wash all my dolls clothes by hand and then hang them on the little washing line that Dad made me that was a miniature version of Mum's one (so cool!). I wouldn't want to do all my washing like that every day but it was nice doing it on a hot day like today. After that I returned to the camp to find Steve snoozing so I put up a washing line (we have 2 Kathmandu ones – they are awesome, if you go traveling you should definitely get a few. You don't need pegs and they have clips and suction cups on the end as well as being stretchy. Good design work Kathmandu!) Anyhow, I wrung out the washing (hard work – nearly broke my arm off carrying it all up here!) Then hung it up.
Then Steve woke up and we caught the bus into town. It started raining (of course cause I had just hung up the washing!) We tried a few other bars for Tapas again but our favorite one was still the very first one we tried so we went back there and ate lots. Yummy!

We caught the bus back (after some confusion over where the bus stop was).
